Year of Jubilee

~~~ Leviticus 25:1, 8-17 ~~ Psalm 67 ~~~ Matthew 14:1-12 ~~~
O God, let all the nations praise you!
The year of Jubilee.
This fiftieth year you shall make sacred...
...let the trumpet resound...
The year of Jubilee was a time of great celebration...a time of great joy.
The Latin jubilo, which means "to shout"
The jubilee year was the year that followed
seven consecutive cycles of seven years.
Every seventh year, like every seventh day was set aside
 as holy and marked as special.
The jubilee year was an especially solemn joyous occasion.
In this year of jubilee, then,
every one of you shall return to his own property.
This is related to our celebration of Pentecost, which follows
fifty days after the Resurrection.
During this special year of jubilee all family members
were to be reconciled together.
Slaves were to be set free...debts absolved.
It was a new beginning...a clean slate.
The jubilee year marked fifty years...half a century.
The thought of waiting for fifty years for a grand celebration
today, would not be popular.
Personally I hope to make it to my jubilee year of marriage...
that will definitely be a grand celebration.
It will be a time for the whole family to return home.
Jubilee anniversaries are a time to share family stories...
restoring the richness of past generations.
In Biblical times this year was a time of freeing oneself from bondage.
You may not even comprehend what enslaves parts of your life.
Blessings today come in becoming free
from the bondage of habitual sins.
