Light of Hope

~~~ Second Sunday of Lent ~~~
~~~ Genesis 12:1-4A ~~~ Psalm 33 ~~~
~~~ 2 Timothy 1:8B-10 ~~~ Matthew 17:1-9 ~~~
Jesus called Peter, James, and John to follow him.
They had no idea that when they followed him
 up this mountain they would be stunned
by what happened to their leader.
They climbed the mountain to witness
the blinding light of the divine glory of Jesus.
...he was transfigured before them;
his face shone like the sun
and his clothes became white as light.
They were given a glimpse of heaven.
God also sent down Moses and Elijah.
Moses, chosen by God to lead the people to the promised land.
Elijah, one of the greatest Jewish prophets.
When we look at the sun our vision is greatly effected.
You might call it a sunburn of the eyeball.
If the sun is brightly shining in your face you instinctively
 want to protect your eyes from the light.
The human eye is very sensitive to bright light.
During the Transfiguration the face of Jesus
was as bright as the sun.
The three apostles with Jesus must have initially reacted
by turning away or covering their eyes.
Subsequently they saw a dark cloud...
heard the voice of God and succumbed to fear.
Jesus immediately responds to their reaction.
He comes to them...
Jesus came and touched them, saying,
"Rise, and do not be afraid."
When we take our last breath many people
 have reported seeing a bright light.
This bright light seems to be an invitation to come closer.
If this is the light from the face of God
 it might explain why there is an experience
 of peace and not fear.
The Transfiguration gives us hope.
"Do not tell the vision to anyone
until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
Let this second week of Lent
bring you closer to realizing that Jesus
will never leave you or abandon you.
The Transfiguration is the Light of Hope.
A Bright Light...
~~~  Saint Thomas Aquinas ~~~
~~~ Priest and Doctor of the Church ~~~
~~~ 2 Samuel 7:18-19, 24-29 ~~~ Psalm 132 ~~~
~~~ Mark 4:21-25 ~~~
For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.
Saint Thomas Aquinas...
 one of the most influential thinkers and
prolific writers of medieval Scholasticism.
His most well known writing is his
Summa Theologica.
He has been called the 'Universal Teacher'.
A few quotes from St. Thomas Aquinas...
There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than friendship.
Wonder is the desire for Knowledge.
Love takes up where Knowledge leaves off.
The things that we love tell us what we are.
It is requisite for the relaxation of the mind that we make use,
from time to time, of playful deeds and jokes.
Saint Thomas was such a bright light
that it would have been impossible to keep it hidden.
He began with wonder at a young age.
He quickly moved into his period of knowledge
during his extensive schooling.
His writings validate his own wonder and knowledge
culminating in great love.
It is true for us as well.
Begin with wonder...embrace the pursuit of knowledge...
 arrive in the realm of greater love.
We have much to learn from Saint Thomas Aquinas.
We are Blessed today with the wisdom of Thomas.
Read more of his quotes;
pick one that speaks to you...
write it in your journal for future reference.
Let the saints inspire and encourage you along your journey.
~~~Peace~~~

Extreme 'Spiritual' Makeover

The Conversion of Saint Paul

~~~ Acts 22:-16 or Acts 9:1-22 ~~~ Psalm 117 ~~~ Mark 16: 15-18 ~~~
"Go out to all the world, and tell
the Good News."
Just as Paul was commissioned to spread the good news
we too have been given the same calling.
Saul, as he was called then, would have never dreamed that he could be
completely turned away from his persecuting endeavors.
He actively sought out those followers of 'the Way'
and handed them over to the officials as criminals.
You might wonder how in the world God found Paul
a desirable candidate to be in the service of the Lord.
Not only did God find Paul desirable;
he inspired him to preach and write with unbelievable clarity.
Much of the New Testament is attributed to Paul.
Much of what we find inspiring enough to quote today comes from Paul's writings.
Just think how much we would be missing had it not been for Paul.
The story of Paul's conversion gets our attention
 because it is vivid, detailed, and graphic.
We know what it is like to be blinded, even only temporary,
 by bright sunlight.
Your first reaction is to close your eyes in order to diminish
the amount of light entering into your eyes .
This bright light is abrupt and the eyes need time to physically adjust.
Paul needed time to adjust to what had just happened to him.
Not only did his eyes need time to physically adjust;
his soul also needed some time.
The bright light of God had shocked him inside and outside...
physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
God sent a messenger to comfort Paul and to usher him into his new reality.
His new reality was to live for God from then on.
He was no longer living to gain approval from the authorities.
It was no longer important for him to prove his loyalty by rounding up the wayward...
those pesky believers of 'the Way'.
Ananias, acting on behalf of God,
 lays hands on Paul that he might regain his sight.
Ananias did as he was instructed, in spite of having reservations about Paul.
For Paul's reputation had preceded him throughout the region.
He was a person to be avoided lest you risked imprisonment.
Paul's conversion was more like a spiritual triage.
He experienced three conversions...
physical
restored eyesight
spiritual
inspired words
emotional
new heart
Paul's conversion resembled an extreme makeover.
Everything about who Paul thought he was God changed.
God redirected Paul's passion and conviction.
Paul had the strong character traits God could use;
 he just had to convince Paul...
it took the Extreme Makeover to accomplish it.
Remember God looks at your strong traits and uses them
to spread his Good News.
What you perceive as short comings God can repurpose.
Never underestimate what God can accomplish with your life.
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.
"Go out to all the world, and tell
the Good News."
