The Surprising Family Reunion

~~~ Genesis 46:1-7, 28-30 ~~~ Psalm 37 ~~~ Matthew 10:16-23 ~~~
'...do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak...'
It is God the Father who speaks through Joseph
 as he finds himself in an awkward situation.
The very family members who wanted him dead were standing before him.
Joseph does not respond in a typical human way instead
because it is God speaking through him he shows compassion to his brothers.
Because God is giving Joseph the words eventually
he is reunited with his elderly father, Israel.
 Jacob's name was changed to Israel after wrestling with an angel.
Jacob, the son who deceitfully received his father's blessing.
God upholds this blessings bestowed on Jacob...years later.
Jacob must have been overjoyed when he was told that Joseph was alive.
Not only is Joseph alive, but he is now in a position
 to save his family from starvation.
God assures Jacob that he should return to Egypt.
...Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt...
God was working in the lives of all parties in this story for generations.
In many ways Joseph is foreshadowing the qualities
we would see in the person of Jesus.
This is a mirror of the return of the prodigal son.
The difference is the son goes out to welcome his father.
...Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot
and rode to meet his father Israel in Goshen.
As soon as Joseph saw him, he flung himself on his neck
and wept a long time in his arms.
When our eyes are opened to our sins, 'running' to reconciliation
is the way we 'run' to meet our Father.
When we are forgiven,
 we too want to cling to our Father in gratitude and love.
We want to experience the arms of our Father surrounding us.
Israel can finally find rest in the God of his father.
He is humbled by how God had fulfilled his father's blessing.
A blessing that he truly did not deserve.
God shows Israel, now late in his life, just how a brother
should treat another brother.
Joseph acts with love, compassion, and justly.
God will provide for all that we need.
Not only will he protect us in times of turmoil;
he will give us the correct words to say.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will grant you your heart’s requests.
Blessings are available whether you are the father
running out to meet your prodigal or
if you are the son rushing
out to meet your estranged father.
Blessings are in peaceful reunion.
How Do You Know Me?
~~~ Rv 21: 9b- 14~~~ Psalm 145 ~~~ John 1: 45- 51 ~~~

In this Gospel story Jesus sees Nathaniel coming toward him and immediately complements him for being a true child of Israel.
Jesus continues to comment the Nathaniel has no duplicity in him.
The dictionary defines duplicity
 as deceitfulness in speech or conduct,
as by speaking or acting in two different ways
to different people concerning the same matter;
double-dealing.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."

Nathaniel was surprised that Jesus knew of him much less
that he could label him a true child of Israel.
It is not much of a stretch to believe that Jesus could read much about
Nathaniel just by looking at him.
Many times Jesus reveals knowledge about a person
in his presence without being told.

Jesus can read our hearts.
Jesus can look into your eyes and words are not needed.
Of course Nathaniel does not know that Jesus possesses this ability
to read hearts. It is expected that he would be surprised.
To Jesus we are like an open book.

Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."

What happens under the fig tree?
It was known that Rabbis like their forefathers
sat and studied under the fig-tree.
Was Nathaniel sitting there under the fig tree with the elders
soaking up as much of their knowledge as he could?
Perhaps the fig tree was a favorite spot for Nathaniel; a place
where he could go to quietly reflect on his life.

Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
There seems to be some mutual recognition between Jesus and Nathaniel.
Nathaniel addresses Jesus as Rabbi...a title of respect...of teacher.
He also immediately acknowledges Jesus as the King of Israel.

Jesus answered and said to him,
"
Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
Whatever happened to Nathaniel under the fig tree was personal
and Jesus somehow reveals to Nathaniel he knew the secrets in his heart.
Jesus makes reference to the fig tree setting it apart as significant.
If the fig tree was not somehow important; then why would
Jesus even mention it to Nathaniel.

You will see greater things than this."

Jesus says to Nathaniel if you think what happens
under the fig tree is great
you are in for a real treat if you come with me.
You will experience things that will blow you away...
just walk with me for awhile and you will be amazed.

Here is our invitation...
this passage has been my inspiration for inviting my readers
to join me under the fig tree.
Truths are revealed the fig tree...Jesus surprises us under the fig tree...
Jesus promises that if we come with him we too will see greater things.

Pray for God to amaze you with things far beyond your imagination.
There is no need for duplicity when Jesus is coming toward you.
After all what could you hide from Our Lord?

Sacred Heart of Love

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

~~~ Hosea 11:1, 3-4, 8c-9 ~~~ Eph. 3:8-12, 14-19 ~~~ John 19: 31-37 ~~~
Hosea is speaking inspired words about God's providential care given to him by God.
God uses these words in order for us to get a clear picture of who he is...our God.
God is using nation of Israel as his example, but we can actually use our name to replace Israel.
"...When Israel was a child I loved him,
out of Egypt I called my son.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
who took them in my arms;
I drew them with human cords,
with bands of love;
I fostered them like one
who raises an infant to his cheeks;
Yet, though I stooped to feed my child,
they did not know that I was their healer."
Below is my rendition of the Hosea prayer:
When you were a child I loved you,
out of darkness I called you, my daughter/son.
Yet it was I who taught you to walk,
who took you in my arms;
I drew you with human (umbilical) cords,
with (wedding) bands of love;
I fostered you like one
who raises an infant (you) to his cheeks;
Yet, though I stooped to feed you, my child,
you did not know that I was your healer.
I knit you into your mother's womb.
I have loved you with an everlasting love.
I will never leave you.
"...For I am God and not a man,
the Holy One present among you;
I will not let the flames consume you."
With St. Paul we too have been given grace
"...to bring to light for all what is the plan of the mystery
hidden from ages past in God who created all things,
so that the manifold wisdom of God
might now be made known..."
Today we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
How would you commemorate the heart of a person?
The heart is actually the center of what makes us human. When the Word became flesh he gave eternal life to the heart. The heart may be more important than the brain.
The heart holds what we love inside hidden from all others.
God the Father sent Jesus to earth, gave him a human heart.
God placed within the human heart of Jesus his love for each one of us...
yes even you.
God knew his love incarnate in the body of Jesus would
compel him to the greatest of all love. This great love would ultimately
carry him to the cross.
His Sacred Heart would be crucified, crowned with thorns,
and pierced all for the love of us.
Join me in praying that we may be
 "...strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones..."
I invite you to pray the verses given to us from Hosea today.
Pray with wonder and awe for how God has loved you.
Allow yourself to be amazed that the Sacred Heart of Jesus
contained real love for you.
